The Audubon Center has been training naturalist educators since 1973, when we had our very first intern, Debbie Paulson. Since then, we have worked with interns from 26 different countries worldwide, and countless locations across the United States. Our interns have moved on to do some amazing things:

  • Natalia Ortega is now working for an environmental organization in Mexico
  • Kathy Palmer now runs the summer program for Conserve School in Wisconsin
  • Nagendra Budhathoki has founded his own NGO called “the Dolpo Institute” to do relief work in Nepal
  • Jim Byrnes is now a teacher in St. Paul, Minnesota
  • Pam Shubat is a water quality researcher for the EPA
  • Dumile Tshingana is now an Education Outreach specialist for the South African Environmental Observation Network
  • Zuzana Salajova is now working for Backroads Bike Tours in Eastern Europe and Costa Rica
  • Patricia Mergen now works for the Royal Museum for Central Africa

This 9-month Naturalist Internship runs through the academic school year, beginning in September or January each year. This is more than just an internship; it is a training program designed to give you real professional experience, develop your knowledge and skills, and leave you better prepared for success as an environmental educator wherever you may go.

As a Naturalist Intern, you have the option to enroll in Hamline University’s graduate-level, Environmental Education Certificate program. The coursework begins on day one, from the moment you arrive at the Audubon Center, though you may never find yourself sitting in a classroom! You will learn by doing, whether that is teaching kids about wolf tracking, identifying spring wildflowers during a Hamline Field Course, banding songbirds, writing a new lesson plan, running our High Ropes Challenge Course, handling our Red-tailed Hawk, or interacting with professional educators over dinner. The Naturalist Internship is part of your Hamline coursework, and you will be surrounded by endless learning opportunities. Click on the links at the top of this page to learn more about this amazing opportunity.

Our Mission:
To protect, improve and promote the enjoyment of the
natural environment through formal and informal
education programs and research; to assist and encourage
environmental education programs, centers, and careers.
Our Vision:
The environment is the blackboard for the Center's educational programs; the common ground that brings us together with the natural world and people from around the globe to share our concerns for one another and the future. It is through positive and shared experience that we hope we can affect the values and actions of our people to create a world of harmonious diversity.
