Group Management and School Responsibility

School Teacher and Chaperone Responsibilities
Students must be under adult supervision at all times during their stay at the Audubon Center.
In order to assure an appropriate standard of supervision, each school is expected to provide no fewer than one adult chaperone per learning group. Most groups find it helpful to have one adult sleep in each dorm room.

At least one adult from your group is required to attend class with each group of your students. Ropes Course requires three adults, and Climbing Wall requires two (three recommended) adults in addition to the two ACNW staff . Having adequate adult supervision insures that your students will be safe and have their needs met. Additional adults are, of course, welcome to participate. We encourage MORE adults than required. This will open more opportunities to the students and won’t run down the teachers!

Student Responsibilities
There may be other schools here during your stay. This gives your students opportunities to meet persons of different economic, social or cultural background than their own. Please be sure to remind your students that they are acting as ambassadors for their school. This means treating all other students and adults, as well as equipment, facilities, and the natural environment with courtesy and respect. If there is a problem with another group during your stay, please inform your liaison immediately so that the problem may be addressed quickly.

NOTE:
The Audubon staff are responsible for all activities specifically assigned to our staff during your stay, including daytime and most evening classes. All group management not specifically assigned to the Audubon staff is the responsibility of the adults accompanying the group.

Suggestion list of ACTIVITIES to do during FREE TIME:

  • Have learning groups go on a nature hike
  • Quiet reading
  • JOURNALING - not only questions, have them write a story, ad-lib, draw and color their experiences
  • Skits - have rooms or learning groups work on skits that they will perform the last night at the Audubon.
  • Supervised outside play time. We have sand volleyball courts, large playing fields, and miles of trails, utilize them while you are here.
  • Bring board games, puzzles, and cards - especially in the winter when it is cold outside and inside activities are desired.
  • Think about LARGE group games, talk to your PE teacher for ideas, THINK TAG!! Get them running and using up energy so that they sleep at night.
  • Evening night hike. If you are interested, ask the Audubon staff for suggestions for the night hike.
  • Group presentations on what they learned in class
